What BIAB Actually Is

BIAB is a builder gel applied directly to the natural nail in a thin, self-levelling layer. It cures under a UV or LED lamp and creates a hard but flexible overlay that protects the nail while it grows. Unlike acrylic, it does not require a primer that strips the nail surface. Unlike standard gel polish, it has enough thickness to add structural support. The result is a manicure that lasts two to four weeks without chipping and that can be removed without significant damage to the natural nail.

How It Differs From Gel Polish

Gel polish is a colour product. It sits on the surface of the nail and cures to a hard finish, but it has no structural thickness. BIAB is a base and a structure. You can wear it alone for a natural look, or apply gel polish colour on top. The key difference is that BIAB supports the nail underneath, which is why it is particularly useful for clients with thin, peeling, or brittle nails. It is also why the removal process is slightly longer. The product is thicker and needs more time to break down.

How Long It Lasts and What Affects That

Most clients get two to four weeks from a BIAB application, depending on nail growth rate and how hard they are on their hands. Exposure to harsh cleaning products, frequent hand-washing, and contact with acetone will all shorten the wear time. We recommend wearing gloves for cleaning and applying a nail oil daily to the cuticle area. This keeps the skin around the nail healthy and reduces the risk of lifting at the edges.

Who It Suits and Who It Does Not

BIAB suits almost everyone, but it is particularly useful for clients with weak, thin, or damaged nails, clients who have struggled to grow their nails past a certain length, and clients who want a low-maintenance manicure that holds up to daily life. It is less suitable for clients who want very long extensions. For that, a full acrylic or hard gel extension is a better choice.
